We say the country, sometimes a first name, and we mean it while we are saying it. Then the service ends and we go to lunch. I have never once had to find out what praying for Iran Christians would cost if the answer arrived at my door with a suitcase. Two people in British Columbia found out. It cost them twenty five thousand dollars they did not have, several months of waiting on a government quota that was already full, and a spare room. The woman who needed the room had asked the United States first. Artemis Ghasemzadeh is twenty eight. She converted to Christianity in Iran, where conversion carries prison and can carry worse, and she left in December 2024 with her brother. They crossed into California. Within minutes she was in detention in San Diego. What happened next is not disputed by anyone, including the members of Congress who later wrote it into a bill. She was not given the credible fear interview that asylum seekers are supposed to receive. She was denied access to counsel. She was separated from her brother. She was told she was being moved to Texas, and was instead put on a military aircraft to Panama. In February 2025 she was in a hotel in Panama City. In March, after weeks of pressure and coverage, Panamanian authorities released her with a temporary permit, and she stayed on legally through most of the year. Her lawyers eventually told her the plain thing: the United States was not likely to let her back in. Here is the part I keep turning over. A bill was written for her. Representative Yassamin Ansari introduced the Artemis Act in May 2025, named for Ghasemzadeh, to bar expedited removal of people who are nationals of countries the State Department has designated for severe violations of religious freedom. Iran is on that list. The bill picked up two cosponsors. It has never received a vote. Advocacy groups issued statements. A petition circulated. Our whole industry, this one included, wrote about her. None of that is what got her out. What got her out was Ian and Naomi Elliot, a Canadian couple who read about her case and offered to sponsor her privately. The Canadian quota for privately sponsored refugees was full for 2025, so there was nowhere to put her. They waited. They prayed about it for months, which is the part that sounds soft and is the part that most people quit doing. Then a resettlement agency called to say a spot had opened. The twenty five thousand dollars came from an American lawyer who had helped the brother of Ghasemzadeh win asylum in the United States. Canada granted her asylum in June. She arrived on Denman Island, near Vancouver, in early July with almost nothing but clothes. She told the New York Times she was still in shock, that she could not believe she was really there, that the struggle was finally over. I want to be careful here, because there is a version of this story built to make one political party the villain and I do not think that version is worth your time. Expedited removal is an authority Congress created and successive administrations have used. The argument is not whether the government may remove people quickly. It is whether it followed its own law in her case, and the specific claims, no credible fear interview and no counsel, are the kind that can be tested and have not been. But I am not writing to you as a court. I am writing as someone who has been reciting Iran on a Sunday for years without ever making a room. There is a sentence of hers in the congressional record from last May, said before she knew any of this would end well. She said she had trusted that the United States would embrace her and let her practice her faith freely. She said being sent to Panama without a chance to plead her case had broken her idea of America. And then she said she hoped it would be a sanctuary again one day. That is a more generous sentence than I would have managed. Scripture keeps putting the stranger and the household in the same verse. Leviticus tells Israel to treat the foreigner among them as native born, and gives the reason: you were foreigners in Egypt. Jesus, listing what will be said on the last day, does not say I was a stranger and you signed. He says I was a stranger and you took me in. The unit of measure is a roof. The quota was full and then a spot opened. That is the whole shape of it. Somebody has to be waiting when the spot opens, and the waiting has to have started before there is any spot, which means it has to look pointless for a while. I do not know how to make a room the way the Elliots did. I do know that I have prayed for Iran a great many times and never once found out what would happen if the prayer were answered in my direction.
